چکیده

Storytelling connects entities (people, organizations) using their observed relationships to establish meaningful storylines. This can be extended to spatiotemporal storytelling that incorporates locations, time, and graph computations to enhance coherence and meaning. But when performed sequentially these computations become a bottleneck because the massive number of entities make space and time complexity untenable. This article presents DISCRN, or distributed spatiotemporal ConceptSearch-based storytelling, a distributed framework for performing spatiotemporal storytelling. The framework extracts entities from microblogs and event data, and links these entities using a novel ConceptSearch to derive storylines in a distributed fashion utilizing key-value pair paradigm. Performing these operations at scale allows deeper and broader analysis of storylines. The novel parallelization techniques speed up the generation and filtering of storylines on massive datasets. Experiments with microblog posts such as Twitter data and Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone events show the efficiency of the techniques in DISCRN.

A Storytelling Planning Process to Transform Environmental Values into Sustainable Cities and Sustainable Behaviours

The concept of sustainability inspired most urban development plans after Rio 1992, although many such plans have not been too successful. An important reason for this is the disjuncture of science from culture and traditional knowledge and planners’ inability to conceptualize the environmental values of societies. This research aims to explore storytelling’s ability to aid in identifying of env...

Teaching through Storytelling as a Way of Improving Emotional Intelligence and Reducing Bashfulness among Female Students

Emotional intelligence is the ability to control and manage emotions. Bashfulness is an emotional characteristic that could lead to social isolation and impact children’s performance across their developmental years. Learning social skills could help shy students overcome this problem. It has been hypothesized that such skills can be taught through storytelling, and hence, improve children’s em...

Synergies between interactive training simulations and digital storytelling: a component-based framework

A vital requirement for a successful software framework for digital storytelling is that it takes the abilities and background of the story authors into account. Dedicated tools should support authors in expressing their stories within this framework at an adequate level and point out an according authoring process for digital stories. The software framework should provide communication interfa...

Having one's cake and eating it too: Coherence of children's emergent narratives

In the emergent narrative approach to Interactive Storytelling, narratives arise from the interactions between playeror computer-controlled characters in a simulated story world. This approach offers much freedom to the players, but this freedom may come at the cost of narrative structure. In this paper we study stories created by children using a storytelling system based on the emergent narra...

Directing value: driven artificial characters

In this paper we introduce the notion of character’s values to mediate between agents and story direction in storytelling systems. By relating characters’ goals with their values, the activation of goals depends on the values that are put at stake by the story incidents. Based on this framework, we propose a reference architecture for value–based interactive storytelling.
